When She Was Ours Ending Explained
by Anna Nordberg

The ending of When She Was Ours leaves plenty to untangle. In this guide, we break down what actually happens in those final chapters, why the story closes the way it does, and where each character ends up. No stone left unturned, but no spoilers past this point.
What Happens at the End of When She Was Ours
After returning from California, Astra realizes Adrian was one of the people in the pitch-black room when he repeats something she said only there. She locks herself in the bathroom and decides she can forgive the grieving girl she was then, but she cannot accept Adrian's betrayal. She confronts him, and Adrian admits he was in the room with Cynthia and Josh Larraby, that Cynthia manipulated the group, and that he has carried the guilt for years. He insists he never deliberately used her stories to get close to her, but Astra tells him the stolen knowledge was between them from the beginning. When Adrian asks if Nick is a better person, Astra says yes. They embrace, he leaves, and beneath her devastation Astra feels a prick of relief.
The Ending, Explained
The ending resolves the novel's central promise. Before she died, Thea asked Nick to promise to help Astra; she had dreams warning that Astra would be in danger. Nick's arrival in Malibu to rescue Astra from Cutter, and his presence at Thanksgiving, fulfill that promise. Thea's faith in him is validated because Nick is the kind of person who cannot hold a secret that would hurt someone—he confessed to Astra about Allie even when it cost him, and he keeps his word to a dying woman. Astra's choice to leave Adrian is the moral counterpart to that: Adrian could carry the secret of the black room for years and use what he learned to become close to her, which makes him, in the book's terms, a lesser person than Nick despite his guilt.
