When She Was Ours Book Club Questions

These questions assume everyone has finished the book and contain spoilers, including the ending.
This story pulls you into messy family loyalties, hard medical choices, and the quiet ways we protect the people we love. There is no easy verdict on right or wrong, so book clubs will find plenty of live wires to pull. Each question is meant to get people talking, not to settle a score.
Use these prompts wherever your group feels most comfortable. You can go in order, pick a topic that speaks to you, or save the final questions for when you want to wrestle with the ending. Let different opinions sit with each other, because this book thrives on ambiguity.
Mothers and Daughters
- 1.Astra's mother's calm on the plane imprinted on her, yet Astra sobs behind the clubhouse after saving a child. How does this split between composure and emotional release define Astra throughout the novel?
- 2.At Phoebe's wedding, Thea wears a wig to put others at ease and walks down the aisle despite her illness. Did you agree with her choice to appear strong for the wedding rather than let her daughters see how sick she was?
- 3.Astra refuses antibiotics for her dying mother, saying she has already suffered too much. Did you agree with that decision? How does her guilt about that choice resurface when she confesses everything in the pitch-black room?
- 4.After Cutter's attack, Astra insists, 'She loved us with everything she had!' How does her fierce defense of her mother's memory complicate learning that Thea had an abortion, rejected Cutter, and had a hidden past he never forgave?
- 5.Phoebe is desperate to get pregnant because she fears dying young like her mother and wants to live long enough to see her child reach adulthood. How does this fear shape her marriage to Eli and her confession that she was jealous of Astra being the good daughter?
