These questions assume everyone has finished the book and contain spoilers, including the ending.
Ransom makes for a rich book club pick because it is built on unreliable memories, shifting perspectives, and moral gray areas. Readers will disagree about Olivia, the evidence, and the people around her, which is exactly what you want in a discussion.
The questions below are grouped by theme, but feel free to use them in any order that fits your conversation. Some are about the storytelling, some are about character choices, and some focus on the trial and the final revelations. Let each person's reaction guide the group, and don't worry if you leave some questions unanswered.
Narrative Choices and Unreliable Narration
- 1.The book opens with a man dying alone in a hotel suite, and only later do we learn it was Winston. Did knowing his fate from Chapter 1 change how you read his romance with Olivia, or did you ever doubt she was the killer because of that opening?
- 2.Avery Sinclair attacks the narrator at Sea-Tac before she boards her flight. Did you initially believe her claim that she didn't know him, and how did that encounter shape your trust in her narration?
- 3.Throughout the book, courtroom transcripts appear in fragments before the actual trial. How did that structure affect your understanding of what really happened, and what did it reveal about Olivia's fear of being convicted?
Understanding Olivia
- 4.Olivia's plan to ensnare Winston begins with manufactured paparazzi photos and a fake identity. When did you first realize her feelings for Winston had become genuine, and were you surprised she accepted his proposal knowing it was part of a scheme?
- 5.Claire Donovan offers one million in cryptocurrency and an NDA if Olivia breaks off the engagement. Did you agree with Olivia's choice to take the deal, or should she have told Winston the truth about everything?
- 6.The flashbacks reveal Olivia's childhood abuse and her escape from Texas, leaving Billy Ray and Colton behind. How did learning what she endured change your view of her life as a con artist and her inability to be intimate with Winston?
- 7.When Colton appears as her defense attorney, Olivia continues to lie about her past. Given that Colton had his own hidden agenda, should she have trusted him from the start, or was her secrecy understandable?
- 8.Dr. Leishman testifies that Olivia's childhood trauma explains her PTSD symptoms. Did you think the prosecution unfairly twisted her trauma into a motive for murder, and did the judge's admonishment of Mitchell feel justified?
The Murder Case
- 9.After her arrest, Olivia realizes Claire used the Visine bottle to plant her fingerprints. Were you convinced Claire was the killer at that point, or did you suspect someone else, such as Colton or even Jack?
- 10.Detective Stanek builds a case with no substantial motive, no forensic placement at the scene, and only trace evidence. Did you think reasonable doubt alone would be enough to acquit Olivia, or did the circumstantial evidence still feel damning?
- 11.Olivia interrupts Colton's closing argument to challenge how he knew about the lavender in Winston's suite. Did you agree with her decision to speak out, or should she have trusted Colton and let the closing continue?
- 12.At the end, Olivia writes to Detective Stanek accusing Claire Donovan of killing Winston and possibly Emelda. Did you find Claire's guilt convincing, or do you think Olivia was still trying to make sense of a tragedy she felt responsible for?
Colton, Billy Ray, and the Ending
- 13.Colton confesses that he framed Olivia because her joy at Winston's proposal 'ripped the heart out of my chest.' Did his jealousy feel like a believable motive, and looking back, were there warning signs of his obsession you noticed earlier?
- 14.Billy Ray reveals that Colton made him promise to send every envelope, and he now doubts Colton's account of their father's snakebite death. How did Colton's manipulation of Billy Ray change your feelings about both Billy Ray and Colton?
- 15.The epilogue has Olivia imagining a new identity as Carolyn Turner in Miami but ending with 'Or maybe never.' Did you believe she would truly stay on the farm with Billy Ray, or is reinvention too deeply ingrained in her character?
