The Seekers of Deer Creek Characters

An art conservator at the Forster Institute and the elder daughter of Tuan and May Nguyễn. She was estranged from her younger sister Calla and sees herself as Calla's protector, a role rooted in May's parting command to keep close to her sister. Her fear of commitment and her hardened shell affect her relationships with Samuel Noi and with her own past, but Calla's return and the mystery of K. P. Ly draw her back into the family secrets.

Arc: Vivi moves from running and hiding, refusing to investigate, and guarding Calla to choosing her own life: she lets Calla go, reconciles with Samuel, stops waiting for May to return, begins painting memories, and builds a home on the farmhouse property.

She is in recovery from an addictive past and has been in therapy, but she also runs toward whatever she wants with impulsive energy.

Arc: Calla pulls Vivi into the search, reconciles with her at Deer Creek, and later lets go of the folding screen to save Vivi during the flood. She then disappears while Vivi sleeps; afterward, anonymous paintings signed with a small red button arrive from around the world, suggesting she remains out in the world and still connected to Vivi.

Arc: Marcel is the force that ends Tam and Justine's summer. He emigrates with Justine to Germany, where he aligns himself with a charismatic chancellor, while the Chaton becomes an art patron.

She had a secret love affair with Justine Allard in Arles and left behind a hidden journal, an overpainted self-portrait, and a folding-screen offering. Her hidden history connects Tuan and his daughters to Blue Mirror.

Arc: In her final months, she writes her account and hides a folding screen in a wall, then sets out to return to the Camargue and go toward the light. Decades later, Vivi and Calla recover her offering, and Vivi restores her identity, so the museum retitles the painting Blue Lovers and frames her sketch beside it.

He dies in a truck crash before he can share his discovery with his daughters.

Arc: Tuan is remembered as a flawed, distant, grief-stricken man whose final months are consumed by the certainty that he knows where the offering is. He drives to Vivi's apartment at dawn intending to tell her everything, but dies swerving to avoid a fawn; his unsent letter and ashes eventually guide his daughters to Vietnam.

Tuan's final letter reveals that May had planned to return home but died in a car accident on the way, and that her family kept the truth hidden for nearly twenty-five years.

Arc: May is absent throughout the present story; her remembered abandonment is transformed by the revelation that she tried to come back. Her last command, 'Keep close to your sister,' remains a binding oath inside Vivi.

Arc: Samuel separates from Vivi after her unauthorized restoration, then gradually reconnects with her. Three years later, they live together on the farmhouse property with Phoebe, and he brings Vivi an envelope containing the antler ring from Latvia.

Arc: Paul begins by refusing to take Ly seriously, then helps Vivi by allowing access to his archive in exchange for Ly's original letter. His email about a shipping log entry points Vivi toward the house on the ravine in Long Xuyên, and later he tells Vivi that Tam's story still needs an ending.

The sister of Emil Blanc and wife of Marcel Allard. In Arles in 1936 she welcomes the disguised artist Tam Nguyễn and becomes her lover, giving her the nickname the Chaton and commissioning the secret blue-lovers painting. She is warm, restless, and ultimately unwilling to leave her marriage.

Arc: Justine and Tam share a passionate summer, but when Marcel returns she ends the affair and emigrates with him to Germany. She never answers Tam's letters and later becomes an art patron there.

Arc: Phoebe grows from a small child in Samuel's life to the girl who receives a watercolor from Vivi and later agrees to keep the antler ring safe.
