Underneath its plot, the novel is really about who gets to define you. Family names, dynasties, prejudice, and official records all try to pin cadets down, but dragons, loyalty, and grief force them to choose their own worth and protect each other. It wrestles with identity, legacy, sacrifice, courage, loss, resistance, and the gap between what is recorded and what is lived.

Major Themes in Threshing Day
Identity, legacy, and belonging
Threshing forces cadets to define themselves against family names, dynasties, and the roles others assign them. Belonging is claimed through dragon bonds, self-declaration, and chosen names, while family legacy remains both a burden and a foundation.
- Mira answers Teine's question about to whom she belongs by saying she belongs to herself.
- Brennan thinks, 'I'm no longer just a Sorrengail. I am Marbh's rider.'
- Bodhi wants to be seen as his own man rather than only Xaden Riorson's cousin; Xaden tells him, 'no one asks, expects, or wants you to be me.'
- Aaric tells Molvic he will fly for the name on his uniform, not the one given at birth, and Molvic calls him Aaric Graycastle.
- Thoirt tells Sloane that Liam did not inherit their mother's gift but Sloane did, calling her the last living Mairi.
Loyalty, sacrifice, and responsibility for others
Survival is often collective, especially among the marked ones, and characters repeatedly subordinate personal safety to protecting friends, siblings, squadmates, and the group. Leadership is presented as a burden of responsibility rather than a privilege.
- Xaden insists, 'You will all live,' takes responsibility for the ten marked ones, and later says he is responsible for the hundred and seven marked ones.
- Garrick leaves Xaden to face a Blue Daggertail and later leaves Masen to face the Orange Clubtail, believing possible death is better than certain death for them.
- Xaden checks the list of willing dragons to protect Liam; Liam says there is nothing he would not do for Xaden.
- Rhiannon stands between the Orange Daggertail and unconscious Visia, and says second squad will welcome Visia if she has to repeat.
- Imogen reaffirms her unflinching loyalty to Riorson even while angry at Navarre and the war college.
Courage, worthiness, and agency under lethal stakes
Dragons test cadets through danger and demand honesty, nerve, and self-determination before bonding. Several bonds are framed as choices or challenges rather than simple commands, and worthiness is proven by standing firm or choosing to persevere.
- Marbh challenges Brennan to find his seat without touching the ground, or fall or burn; Brennan succeeds.
- Teine tests Mira by roaring, felling a tree, and slicing her thigh; Mira holds her ground and says she belongs to herself.
- Feirge tells Rhiannon that if she were not worthy, she would be char by now.
- Cuir tells Bodhi, 'I will always give you a choice,' while demanding he choose to climb or fall.
- Thoirt tells Sloane she will channel only when Sloane is ready, and if Sloane never chooses to wield, they will be companions.
- Sliseag forces Sawyer to choose 'Climb or wallow. Persevere or perish.'
Grief, loss, and healing through companionship
Many characters carry dead family, friends, and squadmates, and the narrative links survival to whether they can endure loss without being consumed by rage. Dragon bonds offer companionship that does not erase grief but promises the characters will not carry it alone.
- Sloane is consumed by grief and rage over Liam's death and plans to die rather than bond; Imogen gives her Liam's wooden daggertail figurine.
- Thoirt tells Sloane she lost her brother Deigh at Resson, says bonding may help them carry their grief and heal, and promises Sloane will never be alone again.
- Imogen lists Dad, Mom, Katrina, and Elyse as people she has lost and refuses to let Garrick get close because everyone close to her winds up dead.
- After Trina falls to her death, Sliseag tells Sawyer her life is extinguished and forces him to choose perseverance over wallowing.
Prejudice, oppression, and resistance against Navarre and the monarchy
The marked ones face open hostility, surveillance, and dehumanization because of their parents' rebellion. Resistance appears in small acts of survival, in Xaden's vow against Basgiath, and in Aaric's explicit rejection of his family's corrupt monarchy.
- Amber Mavis calls the marked ones 'fucking separatists,' and Alic taunts Xaden as 'the Duke of Nothing.'
- Dain's father warns him the marked ones cannot be trusted and asks him to report if they break the Codex.
- Xaden tells Sgaeyl he would burn Basgiath to the ground after his mission.
- Garrick reaches the flight field where all ten marked ones have bonded and thinks, 'Fuck you, Navarre.'
- Aaric tells Molvic he will not stand idly by as his family watches destruction from a gilded tower, and says he intends to tear this kingdom apart.
Secrecy, forbidden knowledge, and recorded versus lived experience
Threshing is wrapped in secrecy and official records that often miss or distort the truth. Characters keep dangerous secrets to survive, while the Compendium records dragons and riders in ways that can be incomplete or misleading.
- Palme regrets ignoring the customary secrecy around Threshing and not recording his own experience.
- Glane says she is recorded as Glane to all and that the bond is forbidden; Imogen agrees to keep her secret.
- Xaden says his ability to keep secrets keeps people alive.
- The Compendium lists Aotrom's recorded riders as 0, yet the narrator is riding him into the sky.
- Kaori announces that Molvic has been spotted in the forest and says Molvic is not on the list and should be given space.
Symbols and Motifs

It represents Liam's love for Deigh, his memory after death, and a bridge between Sloane's grief and her own red dragon bond with Thoirt.

The Polylepis tree
It represents memory of home and lost family, as well as patience and destiny in bonding; Deigh chooses it from Liam's memories of home.
