Threshing Day Book Club Questions

These questions assume everyone has finished the book and contain spoilers, including the ending.
Threshing Day gives book clubs plenty to argue about: loyalty, power, dragon bonds, and the choices that define a rider. The novel turns a single trial into a web of competing needs, so even minor decisions feel worth unpacking.
Use these questions however your group likes. Pick a few that spark debate, go around the circle, or let everyone choose a favorite. There are no right answers here, just chances to compare how you read the characters, their dragons, and the cost of belonging.
Loyalty, Authority, and Power
- 1.Colonel Thadeus Palme's treatise insists professors must prepare cadets while maintaining loyalty to the Empyrean above cadets, yet Kaori warns the marked ones about Cruinn, Raighmur, and Tealach. How do those two obligations conflict when the marked ones enter Threshing?
- 2.Xaden kills Prince Alic Baran after Alic claims he is a prince, and Xaden replies, 'Don't conflate a title with power.' Was that killing self-defense, revenge, or something else, and did you agree with Xaden's choice?
- 3.Dain's father pressures him to report marked ones who break the Codex and to claim a green dragon, but Dain ultimately bonds the red Cath and pledges allegiance to Cath. What does that decision reveal about Dain's relationship with his father and Violet?
- 4.Aaric seeks Molvic, rejects his bloodline and the corrupt monarchy, and says he intends to tear the kingdom apart. How does his insistence on earning power rather than inheriting it contrast with Xaden's view of titles and power after killing Alic?
Dragon Bonds and Identity
- 5.Brennan refuses Flynn Ennis's invitation to enter Threshing with a group and chooses to climb a tree alone. How does that choice shape his bond with Marbh, who challenges him to find his seat without touching the ground?
- 6.Mira answers Teine that she belongs to herself after he recites her family's legacy. How does that answer connect to Brennan's thought that he is no longer just a Sorrengail after bonding Marbh?
- 7.Sgaeyl demands unflinching honesty and says she has seen Xaden's soul before choosing him. How does that interrogation change your view of Xaden's responsibility for the hundred and seven marked ones?
- 8.Liam waits under a Polylepis tree because he believes his future dragon wants him there, and Deigh reveals he chose the tree from Liam's memories of home. How does that blend of patience, memory, and destiny shape Liam's bond compared to the more violent Threshing encounters?
Choice, Trust, and Sacrifice
- 9.Garrick leaves Xaden to face the Blue Daggertail and later leaves Masen to face the Orange Clubtail. Is he sacrificing them or trusting them, and how does Chradh's question about putting others before his own interests complicate that?
- 10.Bodhi charges a Blue Clubtail not on Kaori's list rather than wait for Cuir, saying he rejects having choices made for him. How does Cuir's promise to always give him a choice reframe Bodhi's need to be more than Xaden's cousin?
- 11.Rhiannon stands between the Orange Daggertail and the injured Visia before Feirge appears. How does that act of protecting a squadmate connect to Feirge's later claim that Rhiannon is worthy?
Worthiness and Unexpected Matches
- 12.Sawyer calls himself a repeat and believes he is unworthy, but Sliseag tells him he was not unworthy last year and that Sliseag simply was not available. How does Trina's death and Sliseag's demand to climb or wallow challenge Sawyer's view of worthiness?
- 13.Ridoc initially rejects Aotrom for being young and irresponsible, then chases him and uses his belt to hook Aotrom's tail. What does their eventual bond suggest about accepting an unexpected match rather than the dragon Ridoc thought he needed?
Grief, Secrets, and Healing
- 14.Imogen agrees to keep Glane's secret even though it would destroy Kaori's faith in the Empyrean. How does that forbidden bond tie to her grief over Katrina and her refusal to let Garrick get close?
- 15.Sloane plans to avoid bonding and die in the forest, then blames Dain for Liam's death before Thoirt, Deigh's sister, chooses her and offers to channel only when Sloane is ready. Did Thoirt's promise of choice and companionship change how you read Sloane's grief and rage?
