The Museum of Second Chances Book Club Questions

These questions assume everyone has finished the book and contain spoilers, including the ending.
This novel rewards a group read. It pulls you into the lives of people who are shaped by hidden histories, small objects, and the stories they tell themselves. There is plenty to untangle, from family secrets to questions about who deserves forgiveness.
Use these questions as a starting point, not a test. You can move through them in order or pick the ones that spark the most debate. Let everyone share their own take, and remember that disagreement is part of the fun.
Secrets and Revelations
- 1.When Evelyn discovers that Bob's lace matches her own and that Cora-May was her birth mother, did the reveal change how you understood her lifelong attachment to the museum?
- 2.George Rook confesses to painting the fake Alfred Wallis, and Evelyn initially decides Jacob must never know. Did you think Evelyn was right to try to protect Jacob, or should the truth have come out sooner?
- 3.Evelyn's father Edwin is revealed to be a plagiarist, a thief, and an adulterer who gaslit her about seeing him with Frances Parfait. Did Frances's deathbed confession provide a satisfying explanation for Evelyn's lifelong self-effacement, or did it raise more questions for you?
- 4.The four poster objects—the lace, the painting, the teacup, and the embroidery—each carry painful secrets. Which object's story did you find the most affecting, and why?
Characters and Their Choices
- 5.Sariah spends much of the book angry at Grace, only to learn that Rose is her birth mother and that Grace raised her out of guilt. Did you think Grace's apology at the Copper Pot café was enough, and did Sariah's 4 a.m. phone call feel like the right next step?
- 6.Alison finally leaves Roy after realizing that the butterflies she felt when she first met him were fear, not love. Did you agree with her decision to confront Roy alone at the garage to get her car keys back, or should she have avoided him entirely?
- 7.Roy's abuse is shown through coercive control, from taking Alison's phone to the unspoken rule that she not leave the house. Did the gradual escalation feel realistic, and did the scene where she runs after Sariah's minibus in her socks move you?
- 8.At the council meeting, Evelyn accepts Mr Palmer's demand for five years' rent upfront and says her lawyer will pay, even though she hasn't arranged it. Did you agree with her bluff, or with Della's view that she should have fought the terms?
- 9.Evelyn accepts Simon Warburn's inflated payment for the Lanyon painting as compensation, saying 'time travel is not an option.' Did you think she was right to take the money as recompense, or should she have refused it?
- 10.Alison decides to return Grandpa Fred's embroidered picture to Steven West, saying it is what Fred would have wanted. Did you agree with returning the object, or should the family have kept it?
Second Chances and the Ending
- 11.Della's hidden past as an Australian TV presenter who had a breakdown directly inspires Sariah to name the exhibition 'Second Chances.' Why do you think Della's story resonated so strongly with the group?
- 12.In the epilogue Evelyn appoints Jacob and Alison to run the museum and leaves with George to travel abroad. Did you think this was the right ending for Evelyn, or should she have stayed in Portheast?
- 13.George Rook is introduced as a con artist and forger, yet by the end Evelyn considers him the most genuine man she knows. Did you find his redemption convincing, especially his warning to Grant Pinlow about Roy?
- 14.Della, Sariah, Alison, Evelyn, Grace, and George all get some form of reconnection or reinvention. Which character do you think got the truest second chance, and which was still denied one?
- 15.Evelyn's final speech says that even something broken can be mended and made whole again with the right people around to help. Do you think the ending proves this for the museum, for Evelyn, and for the community as a whole?
