Fourth Wing Book Club Questions
by Rebecca Yarros

These questions assume everyone has finished the book and contain spoilers, including the ending.
Fourth Wing gives book clubs plenty to argue about: loyalty, power, survival, friendship, and the cost of secrets. The dragons and combat keep the pages turning, but the real debates come from Violet's choices and the people who push, protect, or betray her.
Use these questions to spark conversation, not to quiz each other. Pick a few that fit your group's mood, or work through them in order. Let everyone answer freely, and expect disagreements. That is where the best discussion happens.
Characters and Choices
- 1.Violet refuses Dain's plan to escape to the Scribe Quadrant multiple times, even after Xaden warns her and after her injuries. Did you agree with her choice to stay in the Riders Quadrant, and what do you think it says about her relationship with Dain and with her mother?
- 2.Mira tells Violet to forge alliances rather than friendships, but Violet trades boots with Rhiannon and keeps her as a friend. How does Rhiannon's friendship shape Violet's survival compared with the alliances she is forced into with Xaden, Liam, and Imogen?
- 3.Violet kills Jack Barlowe with lightning during the War Games and then retches with guilt, even though Jack had tried to kill her repeatedly. What does her reaction say about the difference between surviving in the quadrant and becoming the kind of rider who can kill in war?
- 4.Violet tells Xaden she believes him but no longer trusts him with her heart after discovering his secrets. Was Violet right to separate belief from trust in that moment, and what would Xaden have to do to earn her trust back in a sequel?
- 5.The Squad Battle task sends Violet's squad into her mother's office, where they steal the map and read letters about Athebyne and Tyrrendor unrest. What did you make of Violet's decision to publicly reveal the theft, knowing her mother would show no mercy?
Power, Justice, and Survival
- 6.Amber Mavis orchestrates the attack on Violet and is executed by Tairn with fire, despite Violet begging for mercy. Did Tairn's statement that justice is not always merciful fit the crime, or did the execution reveal something troubling about the Riders Quadrant?
- 7.Violet's bond with Tairn and Andarna gives her lightning and time-stopping power, but also tethers her to Xaden through Sgaeyl. How does the mated-dragon bond complicate Violet's ideas about independence, trust, and consent in her relationship with Xaden?
- 8.Throughout the book, Violet uses poison, Brennan's journal, Mira's dragon-scale vest, and her intelligence rather than brute strength. How does the novel treat cunning versus physical strength, especially in the Gauntlet, challenges, and Threshing?
- 9.Xaden tells Violet that hope is dangerous and she should focus on things that can kill her, while Violet repeatedly thinks I will not die today. How do those two philosophies clash over the course of the book, and which one do you think the ending validates?
Secrets, Loyalty, and the Rebellion
- 10.Xaden moves Violet's squad to Fourth Wing as revenge against her mother, then later orders Imogen to train her and rescues her from Oren. How did your view of Xaden change from the parapet confrontation to the final reveal that he is working with gryphon riders and hiding Aretia?
- 11.Dain's signet lets him read recent memories, and he uses Violet's memories without her permission, leading Colonel Aetos to send Xaden's squad to Athebyne. How responsible should Dain be for Liam's death and the attack at Resson, and does his earlier protection of Violet excuse any of it?
- 12.The marked ones gather secretly, and Xaden has taken responsibility for 107 rebellion children, as shown by his scars. How does the book use Xaden, Liam, Imogen, Garrick, and Bodhi to complicate the idea that the children of separatists are simply traitors?
- 13.The final chapters reveal that Brennan is alive and part of the revolution, and that venin and wyvern are real. How does this reframe earlier scenes like Violet's father's hidden letter, the missing Fables of the Barren, and Commandant Panchek and General Melgren's interest in Xaden?
Friendship, Sacrifice, and Hindsight
- 14.Liam's death is tied to Deigh's death, and he asks Violet to care for Sloane and hear Xaden out. How did Liam's role as Violet's bodyguard and friend affect your reading of Xaden's choices, especially Xaden's decision to let the squad choose whether to fight at Resson?
- 15.If you could warn Violet at one moment—before the parapet, before trusting Dain with her memories, before walking the parapet to Xaden, or before flying to Athebyne—what would you say, and why?
