The Ending, Explained
ListenWhat Happens at the End of Deal Breaker
The closing sequence takes place during the week of Granny Sterling's funeral. Poppy has been crying almost continuously; Rory keeps her tucked under his arm, gives her water and paracetamol, and reflects that he must protect her light without hiding her away. Connor and Mhairi arrive; Connor's voice is failing, he offers condolences, calls Granny a 'top bird,' and says she left instructions for her WI branch to provide cakes for the fundraising walk. Poppy worries that she has been letting the side down on the walk since Granny died, and Connor jokes that Rory can carry her on the Jurassic Coast Ultra.
Clara and Rafe tell Poppy and Rory that they need to go into the church. Rafe gently offers to speak for Poppy if she is too overwhelmed, but Rory refuses for her because he knows how important the eulogy is and that she has memorised it. Just before walking down the aisle, Poppy stops Rory, says Granny would be furious at her crying and would give her a talking-to about the British stiff upper lip, and wishes Granny were there to bollock her. Rory comforts her. She then says she hopes their daughter has half Granny's gumption; Rory is stunned, and Poppy confirms that she is pregnant.
Rory lifts Poppy off her feet, spins her around, and carries her into a church alcove, kissing her against the stone wall while her legs wrap around him. Rafe's voice calls for Poppy and he strides out looking for her; Poppy shakes with suppressed laughter and tells Rory that snogging in church is inappropriate, while Rory grins that Granny would have been all for it. He remembers Granny's advice to marry Poppy and hopes their child has half her gumption.
The Ending, Explained
The ending is the payoff for Poppy's fear that Rory cannot accept all of her and for Rory's arc from distrust, jealousy, and discomfort with her public life toward protective but non-controlling love. Earlier, Rory believed Alastair Roxburg's lie about Poppy, accused her of leaking their location, called her life 'the Poppy Show,' and failed to shield her from the press, which led Poppy to reject him. By the funeral, he no longer tries to suppress her emotions or take over her eulogy. He hands her water and paracetamol, lets her cry, and insists she can speak for herself because he knows the eulogy matters to her. That is the emotional resolution: he protects her light but lets her shine.
Granny Sterling's death gives the ending its family-legacy shape. Granny had warned Rory not to hurt Poppy and had advised him to marry her; at the funeral, Poppy's pregnancy and Rory's memory of that advice turn the romance toward family and continuity. The pregnancy reveal also rewards the trust rebuilt after Alastair spiked Poppy's drink, Rory's hospital declaration of love, and the flashmob proposal in which Poppy's snort-squeal laugh returns. The closing scene therefore ties together Poppy's openness, Rory's acceptance of it, and Granny's approval.
Connor and Mhairi's presence, Connor's failing voice, and the planned Jurassic Coast Ultra keep the MND and charity thread active. The book does not pretend to solve Connor's illness; instead it closes on endurance, hope, and chosen family. The final joke about Rafe searching for Poppy while she and Rory kiss in the alcove keeps the tone romantic and chaotic rather than solemn, and Rory's hope that their child has Granny's gumption makes the ending about inheriting her courage as much as about the pregnancy itself.

The ending hits harder if you see how you got there.

Questions the Book Leaves Open
- The final text stops before Poppy actually delivers her memorised eulogy, so whether she gets through it in front of the congregation is not shown.
- Poppy and Rory do not confirm the baby's sex; Poppy says she hopes for a daughter, then begins to say 'maybe son' before being cut off.
- The wedding itself is not depicted in the main ending, only the accepted proposal and the pregnancy reveal.
- Alastair's full legal consequences are not shown beyond his detention, the police finding drugs, and the Sterlings' promise that he and his family will regret it.
