Warm Bodies Characters
by John Marrs

Warm Bodies has a big, busy cast: Brenda anchors the novel as a grandmother, cleaner, and secret disposal worker, while Lizzie, Tracy, and Harry stir up trouble. Around her are family, neighbours, farmers, dogs, social workers, police, and a shadowy Broker. It is domestic, dark, and full of small village surveillance.
On this page you will find all the characters, sorted by their roles in Brenda's story. Each entry covers who they are, how they connect to Brenda and each other, and the arcs and relationships that shape the novel, from Lucy and the grandkids to the Village Vibes group and the people who notice too much.
Main Characters
Brenda
ProtagonistBrenda is a grandmother, former school cleaner, and secret dismemberment-and-disposal worker living in Albert's old cottage in Stretton. She is known as Granny to her grandchildren, as Mrs Houghton to authorities, and is the unnamed first-person narrator; she hides her work in a soundproofed shed and rents land from Michael under the guise of growing vegetables. She is intensely protective of her daughter Lucy and grandchildren, avoids romance with Michael, and believes morality will not put food on the table or keep a roof over their heads.
Arc: Brenda moves from managing a hidden double life while being watched by the Village Vibes WhatsApp group to killing Lizzie/Beth after Lizzie discovers Riley's corpse and admits reporting her. She discovers Riley's corpse in Brenda's shed and is killed by Brenda.
Arc: Lizzie moves from friendly confidante and hidden accuser to confronting Brenda in the shed, admitting her actions, attacking with a scalpel, and being stabbed to death.
