The Last to Drown Characters
by Noelle W. Ihli

This thriller has an ensemble cast that blends grieving passengers, seasoned guides, and dark backstory figures. At its center is Kaia, whose loss and lingering questions drive the trip down the Garnet. Around her are people like the secretive Leo, supportive passengers, and echoes of her late husband.
Here you'll find each character's role in the story, their personalities and key traits, and how their arcs unfold. The page also covers relationships, such as Kaia and Parker or Deborah and Beth, and notes who appears in memory versus the main timeline.
Main Characters
Kaia
ProtagonistKaia is the grieving widow who takes the women's rafting trip down the Middle Fork of the Garnet, a trip she originally planned with her late husband Parker. She still wears her wedding ring and initially insists she is not there for healing but for Parker. As the trip turns deadly, she becomes a determined survivor, rowing through rapids, helping pilot the decoy raft, and fighting Lee alongside the other women.
Arc: Kaia begins in deep grief, even drawn to the dangerous water at Devil's Stairs, but over the course of the massacre she chooses survival and self-sacrifice. Guided by Parker's remembered voice, she helps defeat Leo and reaches the epilogue where she opens Parker's letter and begins to move forward.
- Parker — her late husband; his memory and imagined voice guide her
- Leo Marsden — the killer she first knows as guide Bryan and ultimately helps drown
- Macy — guide who rescues her and becomes a fellow survivor
- Allie — fellow passenger and decoy-raft partner
- Pam — fellow survivor who fights alongside her
- Deborah — fellow survivor and raft-mate
- Imani — fellow survivor she wants to keep alive
- Bambi — her dog, waiting at home and with her in the epilogue
Leo Marsden
AntagonistLeo Marsden is the man who has been posing as Bryan, the newer guide on the rafting trip. He hides his expert river skills behind an inept 'Flip-Flop' persona while actually being the Camas Creek survivor who, according to the true-crime theory Allie uncovers, committed the original massacre and changed his name. He sabotages the trip, murders guides and guests, strings razor wire across Anvil Falls, and hunts the surviving women because he wants credit for his crimes.
Arc: Leo is revealed as Bryan and chases the survivors down the river, taunting them and setting traps. He is tricked by the dummy raft, confronted at Splinter Ridge, knocked off balance by Macy, and drowned by Kaia, Macy, and Pam.
- Kaia — survivor he hunts and nearly kills
- Josh — guide he stabs to death after Josh intervenes to save Kaia
- Gracie — guide he murders at Camas Creek camp
- Macy — guide who strikes him with an oar and helps drown him
- Allie — woman whose true-crime community he mocks and whom he shoots
- Cindy Marsden — his mother; according to Allie's researched theory he killed her at Camas Creek
- Adrian — boss who gave him a guiding job under the alias Bryan
Supporting Characters

He appears only in memory, dreams, Kaia's imagination, and as a voice she hears during life-threatening moments. Before his death he promised to come back as a hawk and left a letter for Kaia saying she is his person.
Arc: Though dead before the story begins, Parker changes from a source of unbearable grief into a guiding presence that helps Kaia survive. His voice warns her about the razor wire, tells her not to give up, and gives her the 'let the paddles do the work' message that becomes the decoy plan.
- Kaia — his wife; he still calls her babe in her memories and dreams
- Raymond — his friend whose dirt-bike wire accident informs his warning
- Bambi — the dog in Kaia's care after his death

Arc: Macy starts as a responsible guide trying to keep the group calm, then becomes separated and presumed lost. She returns as the group's strongest guide, fighting Leo and helping drown him, and in the epilogue is recovering with facial surgeries.

During the attack she becomes a key survivor who reveals the Reddit-sourced theory that Bryan is actually Leo Marsden.
Arc: Allie begins as an obsessive true-crime fan whose fears are dismissed, then struggles with guilt for not recognizing Bryan earlier. She risks herself as Kaia's decoy-raft partner and is shot by Leo's last arrow, but survives and plans in-vitro treatment in the epilogue.

- Josh — fellow guide she smiles at shyly
- Leo Marsden — killer under the alias Bryan who murders her

She survives the attack and later drives through the night to support Imani.

Although she cannot row and admits she cannot swim, she keeps a faint spark of humor and fights to survive.

She panics when the satellite phone goes missing and interprets it through the old case. She is later killed at Anvil Falls by Leo's razor wire, her mouth cut ear to ear.
Arc: Nikki does not survive; her death gives Allie a personal stake in the horror and confirms that the group is being hunted.
- Allie — close friend, tentmate, and fellow Camas Creek enthusiast
- Leo Marsden — killer who kills her with the razor-wire trap
Beth

- Leo Marsden — the man who, according to the revised theory, framed or replaced him as the killer

Arc: Raymond does not appear in the present; he only exists in Kaia's memory as a cautionary example of death by wire.
- Parker — his friend
Adrian
SupportingAdrian is Macy's boss at the rafting company. Macy remembers that Adrian dismissed her complaints about Bryan, insisted Bryan be given a chance as a guide, and mentioned a top-secret news article featuring the crew. Macy later suspects Adrian may have known Bryan's true identity.
Arc: Adrian never appears in the river scenes; he is only recalled as part of the backstory explaining how Leo got hired under the alias Bryan.
- Macy — her boss
- Leo Marsden — gave him work as Bryan despite Macy's warnings
Cindy Marsden
SupportingCindy Marsden is Leo Marsden's mother in the backstory Allie pieces together. She is described as a successful, glamorous CEO who supposedly planned to send Leo to a wilderness bootcamp. Arc: Cindy does not appear in the present; she exists solely through Allie's researched theory about Leo's past.
- Leo Marsden — his mother and alleged victim
Bambi
SupportingBambi is the dog who lives with Kaia and appears in the domestic scenes that bookend the river trip. She is left behind during the rafting trip but is present at the end when Kaia opens Parker's duffel bag. In the final chapter she rests her head on Kaia's knee and sits with her afterward.
Arc: Bambi does not change over the story; her presence is a quiet anchor as Kaia begins to process Parker's death.
- Kaia — her owner
- Parker — the dog that stays in Kaia's life after his death
