Lightwing Book Club Questions
by Caroline Peckham

These questions assume everyone has finished the book and contain spoilers, including the ending.
Lightwing gives a book club plenty to argue about: loyalty, power, curse-breaking, and the messy ways people try to protect each other. The characters rarely make clean choices, so readers will likely disagree about who to trust and what counts as love, duty, or control.
Use these questions to spark conversation rather than quiz anyone. Pick a few that fit your group's interests, give everyone a minute to skim, then let opposing readings collide. Spoilers are fair game here, so finish the novel first.
Characters and Choices
- 1.Ferris agrees to help Hendrix Bane claim the boon only after the Dragon refuses to help her escape and insists she must fulfill her task—did she have a real choice in that moment, and how does that refusal shape her later insistence that she will not be a prisoner?
- 2.How do you reconcile Hendrix Bane's protectiveness with his habit of locking Ferris away—first in the warded bedroom, then in his quarters after the wall creature attacks—especially after Amelda traps them on the balcony for an honest conversation?
- 3.Rissa stole the Serpent's mark, abandoned Ferris, and later rides the Serpent while the Lost Children's song draws Fae to their knees; is Ferris's belief that Rissa can be reminded of who she was justified by what we see, or is Hendrix right that Rissa is beyond redemption?
- 4.Amelda reads Ferris's journal, asks her to look for the good in Hendrix beyond his monster mask, and later carries the wriggling pack that releases their grandmother against the Coterie—how does her mixture of matchmaking, grief, and appetite for revenge affect your view of her?
- 5.Which relationship most drives the book for you—Ferris and Hendrix's antagonistic attraction and mutual claiming, Ferris's desperate loyalty to Rissa, or Hendrix and Kashton's rift over the crown and the family curse—and which specific scene decided it?
Family and the Cursed Household
- 6.The family breakfast where Baldrick's fake eating collapses and Amelda admits the charade shows a household performing life it cannot live; what does that scene reveal about the curse, especially when Father briefly recognizes the Phoenix and Hendrix asks him to stay?
- 7.Kashton impersonates Hendrix with a cloak and painted infinity tattoo while Amelda unleashes their grandmother and Baldrick's head is cut off and reattached as the curse breaks—which part of the Rivenspire uprising best shows the family working together, and which part shows how fragile that unity is?
Bargains, Secrets, and Hidden Histories
- 8.Ferris trades her name to Azbeth for dandelion tea, offers blood to see Rissa, and later traps Azbeth in a water vortex to force an exact written bargain—did the final bargain with Azbeth feel like a fair price, and did you agree with Ferris refusing every loophole?
- 9.Ferris secretly uses the Boar to find the crown while Bane digs with his bare hands, then realizes Bane is the Crownthief who hid the Last King's crown in the forest ringing the palace in Rivenspire—how does that hidden identity change the trust between them?
- 10.When the Lost Crone reveals that Arthrun and Sorshana trapped Providence in a cat's eye crystal by bargaining with Woe for the blood games, how does that story reframe Queen Sorshana's rule and the Coterie's violence?
Power, War, and Trust
- 11.Ferris flatters Providence's vanity to hold him long enough to learn about the song of forgetting and the planned war between lands, then releases him after he warns 'be careful what you wish for'—was releasing him the right choice, and did you trust his promise to break the curses?
- 12.Did you agree with Hendrix's choice to accept the rebels and march an army of Hollows on Rivenspire despite his fear of repeating past losses, and did Ferris override him too easily when she told Cressitina the rebels would be released?
Bonds and Consequences
- 13.Woe tears the twelve amulets from Ferris and hands them to Sorshana, who wears them and sentences Ferris to the blood games while Hendrix's connection to Death fails and Death leaves him in his cell—how did this ending change your understanding of Ferris's spirit bonds and Hendrix's control over death?
- 14.Ferris is given only a sharpened stick in the blood games and vows to find Hendrix again in this life or the next—does that vow read as hope, defiance, or tragedy given that her spirits have been stolen and Hendrix's Art is blocked?
