Heart Of A Goon II gives book clubs plenty to unpack: loyalty, trauma, revenge, family secrets, and the messy ways people try to protect each other. The characters rarely make simple choices, so even readers who agree on the big moments will argue about the smaller ones. These questions are meant to start honest conversation, not a quiz.
Pick a few that hit hardest for your group, or work through them in order. Let everyone answer before you debate, and let disagreements breathe. You do not need to reach consensus. The goal is to understand why these people act the way they do and to notice what the story suggests about love, grief, and power.
Trauma, Grief, and Mental Health
- 1.Menace snaps out of a trance at the engagement party, later refuses his medicine, orders the city shut down, and tells Stevie he would have killed himself if she had died. How did you read his disassociation and trauma, and did Stevie and Zoya handle him the way you would have?
- 2.Inez lets Rylan inject her with heroin for the first time, stays in her bedroom while Ramelle is hungry, and later tells Goon that Forty is the Red Hook Killer and tried to kill her. How did you balance sympathy for her grief over Melle with frustration at her choices?
- 3.Zoya wakes in a hospital after her suicide attempt, Kora tells her 'You're mine, Zoya Bean... mine,' and Maverick promises a pizzeria while saying he misses their parents too. How did this hospital scene change your view of the Caselli siblings and the way they handle grief?
- 4.Kobe confronts Skyler about treating her bipolar condition holistically and reveals his sister died by suicide from untreated mental illness, while Zoya admits she has diagnosed depression and fears motherhood. Was Kobe out of line, or did Skyler need to hear it?
- 5.Goo proposes to Zoya during sex and later asks Menace for his blessing, while Zoya says 'Good things like this don't last for me, and I'm scared it will be taken away.' Did the proposal feel earned, and what do you make of Zoya's fear given everything she has been through?

- 8.Menace enters the Federal Reserve ball as 'Mitchell,' shoots Scotty Boy, has Luci burn Alex with a flamethrower, and forces guests to dance to 'Linger' while the crew fights its way out. Was this retaliation satisfying, or did it cross a line even for Menace?
- 9.Ramelle is shot after a man says his father owes money, and later we learn Walt abducted women for egg farming, dumped bodies in Red Hook, and killed Jo when she found out. How did the Red Hook Killer thread and Inez accusing Forty reshape the story for you?
Family, Loyalty, and Protection
- 10.Menace sends Stevie and Dennis to the island, Stevie orders Duke as Mrs. Caselli to go protect her husband, and Menace stays behind with Corleon to retaliate. Did you agree with Menace staying behind instead of going with his family?
- 11.Goo refuses to get on the jet, tells Menace 'Family don’t quit on family,' and later breaks into Ollie's home with Khaos while Zoya is pregnant on the island. Did you understand his need to handle Ollie himself, or did it put too much at risk?
- 12.Zoya tells Ms. Sharon she is pregnant before Gerald can tell his mother together, and Sharon later says Gerald will be a great father and Zoya a great mother. Did you agree with Zoya telling her when she did, and did it undercut Gerald's wish to share the news?
