The Ending, Explained
ListenWhat Happens at the End of Deuce
At the Sunday family dinner, Deuce arrives with Maceo and sees Maddie slap Senior after Senior tells her they should stop seeing each other. Deuce confronts Senior, says he loves him but warns him to stay away from Stephanie because she is happy with Aaron; Senior says he hears him. Salima arrives with Karen Navarro, Stephanie, and Shar. Karen is nervous but Grams and the family welcome her, and she recalls coming to the house with Iman. Stephanie and Senior have an awkward exchange while Senior stares at Stephanie's ring.
At dinner Deuce stands and announces that he and Salima are together and that she is pregnant: 'in about thirty weeks... we are having a little Dillinger.' The family reacts with shock and excitement. Deuce then proposes with a three-carat princess-cut ring, telling Salima he wants to see forever with her. Salima accepts, cries, and the family comforts her; Karen smiles and squeezes Deuce's hand, having already given her blessing on condition that he keep Salima safe. Salima leads Deuce into a downstairs bathroom to show her gratitude before the family party outside.
About a year later, Salima wakes to Deuce dancing with their three-month-old daughter, Darlyn Dream Dillinger. Salima is married to Deuce, has completed her degree while pregnant, and is preparing to open Iconic; the Dillingers gave her checks and Deuce gave her the building deed. Her first event will be Stephanie's wedding to Aaron. Senior is unhappy about the wedding and shows up drunk to beg Deuce to ask Stephanie to reconsider; Deuce curses him out but takes him home, and Senior apologizes the next morning. Maddie has moved off the compound but still visits Mia and stays in the family business. Deuce remains active in the family business but avoids long travel; Salima worries for his safety. The book ends with Deuce and Salima flirting, kissing, and Salima saying she could not want anything else.
The Ending, Explained
The ending resolves the central antagonistic romance: Deuce's pursuit, public claiming, financial support, and repeated insistence that Salima will be his wife pay off in the pregnancy announcement and proposal. Salima's distrust and desire for independence are not erased; she has her degree, her own building, and a business plan, and she accepts help while still asserting herself. The public family dinner makes the commitment communal rather than private, tying Deuce's love for Salima to Dillinger family acceptance.
The proposal also pays off earlier setup: Deuce tells Salima she will be his wife, Karen gives a conditional blessing, and the pregnancy is discovered after Deuce's fear and jealousy. His warning to Senior shows his loyalty to Stephanie and his growth from treating his father's behavior as none of his business. Stephanie's engagement to Aaron and Senior's drunken regret close the older generation's romantic triangle in a way that mirrors, but does not repeat, Deuce's commitment.
The final domestic scene shows what the ending means: Deuce's possessiveness is reframed as devotion, and Salima's earlier fear and trauma are not the final note. At the same time, the book does not pretend the danger is gone; Deuce still works in the family business, avoids long travel, and Salima hugs him tighter after jobs. The ending chooses romantic and family stability over a final criminal confrontation, while leaving the cost and risk of Deuce's work in the background.

The ending hits harder if you see how you got there.

Questions the Book Leaves Open
- How long Deuce can remain active in the family business while avoiding long travel, and whether Salima's fear for his safety will ease over time.
- Whether Salima's trauma from Mirron's kidnapping and assault is fully addressed; the notes show she earlier refused therapy, and the ending does not state whether she later gets help.
- Whether Iconic succeeds and how Stephanie and Aaron's wedding goes, since both are upcoming rather than shown.
- What happens between Senior and Maddie after the slap, and whether Senior truly stays away from Stephanie.
