Dark Horse Book Club Questions

These questions assume everyone has finished the book and contain spoilers, including the ending.

Dark Horse gives book clubs plenty to argue about: trust, control, vigilante justice, survival, and whether protection can slide into possession. The characters make messy choices, and the novel keeps asking you to sit with them rather than sort everyone neatly into heroes and villains.

Use the questions as flexible prompts, not a quiz. Pick a few to start conversation, let members respond in their own order, and circle back to the ones that spark disagreement. They work well for a single lively meeting or several smaller discussions focused on character, tension, and belonging.

Confession, Survival, and Self-Trust

  1. 1.Sienna first tells Sterling only that her marriage was a 'messy kind' of failure, then later confesses in the rain that she planned and killed David. How did that delayed confession change your understanding of her survival story?
  2. 2.On the Ferris wheel, Sterling tells Sienna she does not have to apologize for bleeding and says he believes her. What does that moment reveal about what Sienna needs after David, and why does it matter that a near-stranger offers it?
  3. 3.Sienna finds David's photograph and the 'Wife Hacks Lawyer Husband to Death' headline at the Serial Killer Museum and flees Blackwood. Was her breakdown and confession to Sterling the real turning point of the book?
  4. 4.Sienna's shoebox contains a napkin from The Hollow, a motel keycard, Sterling's shirt button, and other proof of good things. What does the box reveal about how she has changed since David?
  5. 5.Delaney tells Sienna she actually knows what she is doing, and Sienna feels law is reachable again. How does reclaiming her legal identity fit with her escape from David and her decision to stay in Blackwood?

Protection, Possession, and Surveillance

  1. 6.Sterling secretly removes the fuel pump relay and ECM main fuse so Sienna cannot leave Blackwood. Did you read that as protective, possessive, or both, and how did it affect your sympathy for him?
  2. 7.Sterling hides a listening device in Sienna's room, has Ryder shadow her, and considers upgrading to a camera. How did the surveillance themes affect your trust in his relationship with Sienna?
  3. 8.Did you agree with Sienna's choice to stay with Sterling after learning he tortures and kills people he judges deserving, and after he calls her 'mine'?

Blackwood's People and Chosen Family

  1. 9.Hattie pressures Sienna into staying at the inn and later drags her to Rodeo Night, while Babs calls her 'Little Miss Roadkill' but checks her pupils and feeds her. How do these two women shape Sienna's place in Blackwood?
  2. 10.At the wedding Hattie threatens Sterling with creative ruin if he messes up Sienna's happiness. What does her warning add to the book's ideas about chosen family and protection?

Violence, Justice, and the Brotherhood

  1. 11.Sterling brands Donald Hinkler as 'correction,' and the notes connect him to Ryder and Jett through violent vigilante justice. How does that brotherhood complicate the romance plot?
  2. 12.Harvey keeps Emmy-Lee's skeleton, calls Sienna his latest 'gift,' and punishes 'bad girls' in his stone basement. How does his horror connect to the novel's larger questions about control and possession?
  3. 13.Sienna helps Sterling kill Harvey and says she is not broken; six months later she marries Sterling in a meadow. Did the shift from the basement to karaoke and wedding feel earned?

Tone, Humor, and Open Endings

  1. 14.The pie landing on Sterling's chest and the embalming-fluid disaster at Bloom & Gloom are played for comedy. Did the absurd humor balance the trauma and violence for you, or undercut it?
  2. 15.The final scene has Ryder tackle a woman with bite marks who says 'The Feeders' are coming. How did that ending affect the book's closure, and did it make you want the next Blackwood Cowboys story?
