Vicious King Book Club Questions
by Natalie Kane

These questions assume everyone has finished the book and contain spoilers, including the ending.
Vicious King gives book clubs plenty to argue about. The novel keeps returning to protection and control, trust and secrecy, and the cost of loyalty, so even readers who agree on the plot may disagree about what counts as love, safety, or betrayal.
Use these questions to start honest conversation, not a quiz. Pick a few that spark strong reactions, give everyone a minute to note a moment that changed their mind, then compare where you drew your own lines. You do not need to cover every question in one meeting.
Secrecy, Trust, and Family Bonds
- 1.Rina agrees to one dinner with Dr. Alex Luttrell while believing Carson is dead, and Carson follows the date and exposes Alex's wife, children, and affair. Did you agree with how Carson handled the date, or should Rina have been told he was alive before she went?
- 2.Rose tells Carson that she helped Rina escape Damien and believes Rina may still be alive. How does Rose's revelation change Carson's grief and the family's search, and did you trust her account before Spider confirmed Katrina St. James in Portland?
- 3.Rina confirms to Charlie that Carson is his father after Charlie recognizes him from a mantel photo and says that is his daddy. Did you agree with how quickly Charlie welcomed Carson, and what does that say about the stories Rina kept alive about his father?
- 4.Stacy is beaten nearly to death, Rose wants to study therapy, and Stacy later works at the King of Spades spa through Carson and Rina's scholarship program. What does the novel suggest about survival and repayment through these two women?
Protection, Control, and Autonomy
- 5.Carson buys the house next door and watches Rina and Charlie for three days before revealing himself. Is that protective surveillance or a violation of Rina's autonomy, especially after the later discovery of the tracker in her thigh?
- 6.Mildred moves to Vegas as house manager after Carson hires her for ten million a year. What does Mildred's role reveal about chosen family and about Rina's loss of control, especially when Mildred tells Rina the move was decided for her?
- 7.Rina confronts Clyde for not looping her in about the school threat and later fights a knife-wielding attacker at the safe house. How does this sequence challenge or reinforce the book's ideas about who gets to protect whom?
- 8.Rina thanks Carson for finding her and bringing her home, while earlier she had to give up Portland, her job, and her say in the move to Vegas. How do you weigh the romance's homecoming against Rina's repeated loss of choice?
Violence, Villainy, and Revenge
- 9.Carson kills Nico Makris after Nico reveals he works with Leonidas Vlahos and has watched Rina for years. How does this scene set up the move to Vegas, and does it make Rina's fear for Charlie more understandable?
- 10.Leonidas planned to take over Vegas with Charlie at his side on Charlie's tenth birthday, and Carson has Mateo burn him during interrogation. Did the brothers' punishment fit the threat, or did the scene make the mafia's violence too ordinary?
- 11.Damien's coordinated attacks hack the family's phones and computers and hit Carson's mall, Mateo's club, Julian's gems, and Rome's club. How effectively does this plan expose the family's vulnerabilities, and did it make Damien a stronger villain?
- 12.Carson chooses a single shot to Damien's forehead rather than the tortures he lists. Did you agree with that restraint, or did Damien's seven years of harm demand a worse end?
Love, Criminal Loyalty, and the Aftermath
- 13.Carson tells Rina his business includes money laundering, counterfeiting, real estate, and killing for hire, and she says she will not leave him. Did you agree with Rina's choice to accept his criminal life, or did it feel too easy after she worried about Charlie growing up around organized crime?
- 14.Rina taunts Damien about Rose being alive and is waterboarded, then later believes Carson is dead after Damien shoots him. How does this captivity sequence test the soulmate bond established at the wedding, and what did you feel when Carson revealed he wore body armor?
- 15.The book ends with Elizabeth's Christmas birth, Charlie calling her Ellie and promising to keep her safe, and Natasha revealing she is pregnant with twins at family dinner. Does the ending feel earned after Rina's kidnapping and trauma, or does it move too quickly into domestic happiness?
