These questions assume everyone has finished the book and contain spoilers, including the ending.

This novel gives a book club plenty to argue about: loyalty, ambition, family pressure, and the messy line between trust and betrayal. Basileia's choices rarely come with easy answers, and the supporting characters keep shifting what those choices mean.

Use these questions to get past plot recap and into character motives. Pick a few that spark debate, let everyone answer before moving on, and don't worry if your group disagrees. The strongest conversations usually start where readers see the same scene differently.

Family, Duty, and Identity

  1. 1.Basileia enters the tournament hoping the diviner stone will tell her how to convince her mother to name her heir instead of Katisa, but after winning she decides to give the stone to her mother and find her own path. What changed her mind, and did that choice feel earned?
  2. 2.Thrax and Quynh refuse to send Minha to Thrace at five for warrior training, and Basileia is troubled by the break with tradition. How does their choice mirror Basileia's own fight with her mother over Katisa being named heir?
  3. 3.Basileia's mother compares her to a duck paddling furiously under a smooth surface and says she will choose Katisa as heir. How does that argument shape Basileia's decisions in Calydon, at The Red Dragon, and in Sagaris?

Trust, Romance, and Restraint

  1. 4.Zain first steals the diviner stone after asking it 'How do I get what's mine?' and later steals the caduceus while revealing himself as Epirian. Did his apologies and moments of protection ever make you trust him again, or was Basileia right to keep him at a distance?
  2. 5.When Basileia invokes Invara's fertility aspect and pins Zain to the bed, she stops only when he says 'I want you to stop' and then apologizes, appalled. How does this scene complicate the romance, and did it change how you viewed Basileia or Zain?
  3. 6.Basileia stops Zain's drunken seduction because she wants him sober and at full health, and earlier Zain refuses her advances and says he wants to part as friends. Which act of restraint did you find more convincing, and why?
  4. 7.During the flash flood, a voice tells Basileia and Zain to give up and untie the rope, but Basileia pulls Zain back onto the rock. What does that moment reveal about Basileia's self-reliance and her trust in Zain before the cave betrayal?

Power, Justice, and Rescue

  1. 8.Levern bets Basileia 500 staters, insults her, later admits he raped a woman and calls it semantics, and is shot by the Daemonian leader after throwing a dagger. Was Basileia's beating and kicking him in the arena satisfying justice, or did the tournament's violence make the retribution feel troubling?
  2. 9.Basileia keeps impersonating Queen Thalia before the Dracanians and King Actos even after Dione reveals she knows the truth. Did you agree with her decision to maintain the disguise to negotiate for the Thracian concubines, or should she have revealed herself sooner?
  3. 10.Dione says Actos killed her uncle and parents and made her his servant, then cuts her hand and swears a blood oath to Basileia. How does Dione's story change the way you read the Epirian palace scenes, and did Basileia trust her too quickly?
  4. 11.King Actos holds Nesdahlia and Cotys's mother hostage, collars his concubines, and threatens to tell Xander that Thalia took a lover. How does this coercion shape Basileia and Zain's uneasy alliance, and what did you think of Basileia promising the twins she would free them?
  5. 12.Basileia's recurring nightmare about the Carian attack includes Thrax stopping her from saving a family and telling her they cannot save everyone, while Zain later says she cannot save everyone either. How does survivor's guilt drive her need to rescue the concubines, and is Zain's warning practical or cruel?

Faith, Choice, and the Cliffhanger

  1. 13.Invara appears in Basileia's dreams and says only 'Win,' yet Basileia fails when she tries Invara Enyalius and later frees Graarvin and receives the red crystal shard. How much of Basileia's success do you attribute to divine intervention versus her own skill and choices?
  2. 14.The book ends with Zain escaping through a portal with the caduceus and transformed Dagger, Graarvin freed, and Basileia vowing to hunt down the king of thieves and kill him. Is that a satisfying cliffhanger, and do you read Basileia's vow as justice, heartbreak, or both?
