The Wretched Divine Book Club Questions
by Adalyn Grace

These questions assume everyone has finished the book and contain spoilers, including the ending.
This novel gives book clubs a lot to argue about: loyalty, sacrifice, power, and the messy choices people make when survival is on the line. The characters rarely get clean answers, so even quiet scenes can spark strong opinions.
Use these questions to guide discussion, not control it. Pick a few that fit your group's pace, let everyone share first reactions, then dig into the choices and relationships that linger. You can move in order or jump to the topics that hit hardest.
Characters and Hard Choices
- 1.Aurelie cuts off the blue-skinned demon's tail and presents it as proof she killed it, later telling Varen it is exactly what he thinks it is. Did you agree with her choice to maintain that lie, especially after seeing how Varen's awe affected her?
- 2.Myrah sacrifices herself by pushing Aurelie into the hidden passage and stabbing Gluttony to save Orion. How does that childhood trauma shape Aurelie's later obsession with earning a bond and proving she can stand beside Varen?
- 3.Aurelie refuses the envyborn's offer to bond with her and is saved by Azriel, but later bonds with Severin and Yuri. How do her reasons for each bond differ, and what does that say about her changing view of power, trust, and survival?
- 4.Varen transforms into a demon at the bonding ceremony, and Aurelie later cuts out his forked tongue to conceal what he has become. Was that act protection, betrayal, or something else, and how does it affect your view of Aurelie as a daughter and a knight?
- 5.Ilaria kept her bond with Lute secret for a year, while Aurelie kept secrets about sparing the river demon and bonding with Severin. How does the novel treat secrecy between friends, and did Ilaria's reveal change how you saw her?
- 6.Aurelie severs Nicolas's sword hand to stop him from killing Varen. Did you agree with her action in that moment, and how does Solange's rage and Edevane's role as her mother complicate the fallout?
Power, Bonds, and Betrayal
- 7.Severin is revealed as Sabriel, the angel whose wings Yuri carved off after Xadriel killed Selyra. How does this reveal reframe Severin's earlier actions toward Aurelie, Yuri, and the cure?
- 8.The cure requires angel blood and later a Fallen's wings, and Severin tests it on Gareth and the captured prideborn. What questions does the novel raise about sacrifice, consent, and whether a cure that harms some can justify saving others?
- 9.Azriel tells Yuri he was terrified to bond and would die with Varen, while Yuri experiences jealousy and forbidden desire for Aurelie. How does the novel use soulbonds to explore intimacy, duty, and loss of control?
- 10.Severin as Wrath accuses Yuri of betraying Sabriel and says Sabriel died long ago, killed by the person he trusted most. Do you sympathize more with Yuri's past obedience to Xadriel or with Severin's vengeance, and why?
Music, Magic, and Monstrosity
- 11.Aurelie plays her lyre to channel Severin's magic and commands people to drink the wine and fight the angels. How does this scene connect to the earlier theme of music as memory and comfort, and what does it cost Aurelie physically and morally?
- 12.Aurelie's transformation takes hold at the end with a horn growing at her temple, and Marcel asks what they are after becoming demons. What does the ending suggest about identity and monstrosity, especially for characters who drank the wine to fight angels?
Secrets, Revelations, and Political Fallout
- 13.Ilaria is forced into a marriage with Asterion, but the ending reveals Asterion is Orion. How does that twist change your understanding of Ilaria's wedding, her grief for Orion, and the alliance with Frienen?
- 14.King Edric dies after drinking the poisoned wine and is shot by a gilded arrow, while Sybil drains the chalice over his corpse. How did you interpret the royal family's fate and the collapse of political power during the wedding feast?
- 15.Vexara reports that Asterion's sister is alive, and Asterion's form shifts into Orion. What theories do you have about Orion's survival, and how might it change Aurelie's guilt over his death?
