What Happens at the End of The Last Goodbye

On the houseboat, with battery-operated candles and rose petals set up, Briar turns in a circle and finds Bass already on one knee. He calls her Magpie, jokes that she showed up claiming to be pregnant with his child, and tells her he enjoys fighting with her, wants her first and last every day, and never felt relaxed, at home, or at peace until she came into his life. Briar drops to her knees too, says she wants to be wherever he is, and asks him to finish. Bass says she is it for him, asks if she will do forever with him, and asks her to marry him. She says yes, kisses him, admires the ring, and he slips it onto her finger. They exchange 'Cheers to forever, future husband/wife,' and he carries her to the bedroom to consummate the proposal.

Before this, the chapter notes show Briar confronting William with Denton, using her mother Josephine's letters as leverage and threatening to release them to the media unless William accepts the original hotel plan with her added hitch: she will own 51% of the Blue Sky Inn, oversee it, run it, and live in Blue Sky Bay. Bass had flown to New York after four days of silence, reconciled with her, declared his love, and offered to move to New York if needed; they devised the plan together, and she later finds him waiting on a park bench. At the soft opening of the new Bennett's on the Bay, Tatum receives a lawyer's email about Raelyn, and Phoenix warns it could be a scam.

The excerpt after The End picks up with Phoenix/Nix at Four Clovers after Brody texts him that Tatum seems off. Tatum sits alone, puffy-eyed, untouched wine, and tells Nix that Raelyn is dead in a car accident. Nix insists on driving her to the city and attending the attorney meeting. At Ricardo Wallis's office, Tatum learns Raelyn had a five-year-old son, Oliver, whose father overdosed before Oliver was born; Raelyn got clean through Brenna's program and named Tatum in her will as the person she wanted to care for Oliver. Ricardo confirms this but says it is complicated.

The Ending, Explained

The ending pays off the book's central emotional arcs. Bass and Briar began as adversaries—she lied about being pregnant to force a meeting, he called her his worst nightmare—and their relationship grew through apologies, shared grief, and Bass repeatedly showing up. Bass's proposal speech explicitly resolves Briar's fear that everyone leaves and that 'I love you' goes hand in hand with goodbye: he tells her she gave him home, peace, and a reason to relax, and he asks for forever. Briar's choice to demand 51% ownership of the Blue Sky Inn and stay in Blue Sky Bay resolves her need for her father's approval and her longing for home; she stops chasing partnership and instead builds a life on her own terms with Bass.

The use of Josephine's letters as leverage is the final payoff of the family-image-versus-truth thread. William has controlled the narrative, but Briar turns the truth into power and gets a contract that protects the town and gives her ownership. William's agreement—and his promise to be honest with Tabitha—suggests accountability, though it remains uncertain how much he will change. The proposal itself is a deliberately romantic, permanent answer to the book's title and themes: no more last goodbyes for Bass and Briar.

The Tatum/Oliver reveal is a tonal shift and a setup for the next book. It mirrors the series' interest in chosen family, grief, addiction, and responsibility. Tatum, who has been searching for Raelyn, is handed both devastating loss and an unexpected guardianship request. The word 'complicated' leaves the custody question open, ensuring the Blue Sky Bay series continues even as Bass and Briar get their happy ending.
