The Crownless King Book Club Questions
by Dria Andersen

These questions assume everyone has finished the book and contain spoilers, including the ending.
The Crownless King gives book clubs plenty to argue about: magic that costs something, family loyalty, coercive bonds, and leaders who justify terrible choices. The characters rarely fit neat labels, so even simple questions about love, sacrifice, or safety can split the room.
Use these questions as conversation starters rather than a checklist. Pick a topic, let everyone answer one prompt, and follow the tensions that emerge. Spoilers are unavoidable in the questions themselves, so decide ahead whether everyone has finished the book.
Characters and Difficult Choices
- 1.Bria petitions the Celestials to sever the Obayifo power exchange, knowing it could end her family line and the Obayifo power. Did you agree with her choice to sacrifice her family's legacy to stop Jeremiah, especially after the Celestials warn that Chawi-Bayi soul tethers could restore it?
- 2.Amaya agrees to exchange her life for Uncle Paul's when Levi interrogates them after the theft. How did you interpret her motivation in that moment, and did her later escape attempt with Anita change how you saw that bargain?
- 3.Paul steals an Akachi piece from Levi's compound and leaves it at Amaya's house, leading Bayi vampires to capture her. How did your view of Paul evolve after Levi spares him, and then after Paul tells the elders Amaya is with Levi against her will?
- 4.Amaya uses her heartstone to steal her Chawi relatives' powers at the family compound, then later drains every Collective member's power in Levi's throne room. Did you see these acts as agency, desperation, or something else?
- 5.Anita leaves with Richard Fontaine after he admits taking her blood to track her. Did you agree with Amaya allowing Richard to see Anita despite her anger, and what did you make of Anita's choice to go with him?
Magic, Power, and Madness
- 6.Levi's rages, memory loss, and the destroyed throne room are tied to the Akachi meteorite he acquired for his coven. How effectively did the book show the cost of power through his blackouts and the body in his warehouse office?
- 7.Anita's chaos magic eats away at her mind, but she is more lucid at Levi's compound and later leaves with Richard Fontaine. What does her arc suggest about the relationship between magic and madness, and about Amaya's role as her caregiver?
- 8.The Celestials warn Bria about Chawi-Bayi soul tethers and say offspring of such matches will be wholly Bayi. How did that warning pay off when Raven and Sophia reveal Bria Cauly's journals about the Collective's lie and the new Obayifo?
- 9.Raven and Sophia discover the Collective lied about a curse on Chawi-Bayi mating and killed couples to prevent new Obayifo. How does this revelation reframe the warnings from Anita and the Chawi elders about Amaya mating with a Bayi?
Captivity, Safety, and Romantic Bonds
- 10.Amaya calls Levi's home a gilded prison but tells Ms. Sophia her stay is not against her will. Discuss the tension between captivity and safety in her relationship with Levi, especially after their truce at the pond.
- 11.Amaya tells Levi she loves him and feels safe as Queen of the South, while on the yacht she thanks him for allowing Tracy to stay. How do you reconcile the romantic ending with the earlier coercion, blood bond, and captivity?
- 12.Levi tells Amaya he cannot give her freedom because the beast inside him will not allow it, then later negotiates a truce and prepares a candlelit dinner to replace their accidental mating. Did your opinion of Levi shift over the course of the book?
- 13.Bria and Caden enter the gateway together while Jeremiah's horde attacks them. How does Bria and Caden's mate bond compare to Levi and Amaya's blood bond and mating, especially in terms of sacrifice, protection, and claiming?
Leadership, Apologies, and the Ending
- 14.Levi publicly announces Amaya as Queen Amaya Cauly of the Bayi and apologizes to his coven for his Akachi-influenced behavior. Did that apology and his later declaration that the Collective answers to him feel earned? Why or why not?
- 15.The ending has Sebastian shoot Lucian, Levi appoint Nathanial Latham as border mage leader, and Levi become King of the South. Did the resolution of the Collective conflict satisfy you, or did it feel too swift given the earlier Buru threats and border breaches?
