The Apparent Trap Book Club Questions

These questions assume everyone has finished the book and contain spoilers, including the ending.

This novel is a great book club pick because it mixes family secrets, workplace awkwardness, age-gap romance, and grief with plenty of messy, relatable choices. The characters rarely make things easy, which gives your group lots to unpack about honesty, loyalty, and when helping becomes interfering.

Use these questions as a loose guide rather than a script. Pick a few that spark debate, let everyone share first impressions, and save the plot-heavy questions for after you have talked through the characters and relationships. There are no right answers here, just good conversation.

Characters and Choices

  1. 1.Ezzie and Lee's first meeting at the bar ends with Lee abruptly leaving just as Ezzie is about to say yes, and later he pretends not to recognize her at work. How did this misrecognition shape your view of Lee, and did his Thanksgiving apology change it?
  2. 2.Carmen asks Ezzie to keep her father-daughter relationship with Lee private to avoid nepotism assumptions and protect a fragile reconnection. Did you agree with Ezzie's choice to keep the secret, even from Georgia?
  3. 3.Ezzie and Lee launch a reverse Parent Trap scheme, starting with the bean-salad plan ordered under the alias Eddie and continuing with Lee's old Trivial Pursuit edition at Thanksgiving. Were they trying to protect Carmen and Mark, or were they mostly avoiding their own feelings?

Schemes and Family Interference

  1. 4.Mark and Carmen's twenty-nine-year age gap worries Ezzie, especially her fear that Carmen will become a caregiver while hitting her stride at forty. How did the novel use the age-gap debate, through Lee's Thanksgiving tactics and Georgia's Heidelberg study segment, to complicate rather than settle the question?
  2. 5.Lee's Thanksgiving dinner includes giving Mark the wine bottle to open, steering conversation toward older movies, and using an outdated Trivial Pursuit edition. Which of these moments felt most revealing about Lee's motivation to end Carmen and Mark's relationship?
  3. 6.Georgia introduces the Heidelberg age-gap study without letting Carmen review the topics, visibly rattling Carmen on air. Did Georgia's help for Ezzie justify ambushing Carmen, or did it cross a line?
  4. 7.Mark and Carmen announce their breakup at Christmas pozole after an honest conversation about their incompatible futures, and Carmen tells Lee to pursue his own happiness. Did the breakup feel like a satisfying resolution to the age-gap plot, or did it feel too neat?

Grief, Comfort, and Vulnerability

  1. 8.Ezzie tells Lee about eating BLTs daily because her late mother made them, and Lee responds by making her a better BLT and saying she should not settle for 'perfectly fine.' What did this scene show about grief and about the difference between comforting routines and staying stuck?
  2. 9.In Sweden, Ezzie takes Carmen's place in the cold plunge and panics, after which Lee cares for her and confesses that he did not know Carmen existed until eleven years ago. How did this confession change the dynamic between Ezzie and Lee?
  3. 10.Ezzie finally tells Georgia the full story about Lee being Carmen's dad and about Sweden, and Georgia responds by insisting on daily Girly Grief Time. How did Georgia's friendship, and her own grandmother's death, change the way Ezzie handled her grief?

Trust and Boundaries

  1. 11.On the roof deck under the northern lights, Lee lists reasons he and Ezzie should not be involved, including age, Carmen, ghosting her, job complications, and her dad, yet they still share an intimate moment while watching each other. Did you read that scene as a boundary being respected or a boundary being broken?
  2. 12.Lee accuses Ezzie of telling Georgia about him and Carmen, saying no one ever has trusted him. Given Ezzie's promise to Carmen and her friendship with Georgia, was Lee's anger fair?

The Ending

  1. 13.Lee's televised date me BLT segment, planned with Carmen and Georgia, leads Ezzie to meet him on the subway, where he gives her a book about the rainforest acres she helped fund as a child. What did that grand gesture reveal about Lee that his earlier schemes had not?
  2. 14.At the end, Lee flies to Stockholm to tell Ezzie he loves her and brings her a BLT. Did the ending earn their relationship after all the secrecy and scheming, or did you want more consequences for Lee and Ezzie's meddling?
