Savage Heart Book Club Questions

These questions assume everyone has finished the book and contain spoilers, including the ending.

Savage Heart gives book clubs plenty to argue about in the best way: grief makes people lash out, secrets reshape relationships, and almost everyone has a moment when loyalty and honesty pull in different directions. The novel's conflicts around blame, family, money, and belonging invite readers to compare their own judgments with the characters' choices.

Use these questions however your group likes. Pick a few to start, or work through them by topic. Encourage people to point to specific scenes, disagree respectfully, and leave room for readers who sympathize with different characters.

Grief, Blame, and Truth

  1. 1.At the hospital after Lincoln's death, Maverick tells Iris she killed Lincoln and is dead to him, but later Brandon tells Maverick that Lincoln was driving drunk and Iris took the blame. How does that reveal change your understanding of Maverick's grief and blame, and did you sympathize with him before the truth came out?
  2. 2.Iris agreed to say she was driving because Lincoln begged her to protect his scholarship and memory. Did you agree with her choice to keep that secret for so long, especially given how it affected Linc and Jennifer?
  3. 3.Brandon publicly reveals at Lincoln's ceremony that Lincoln was driving drunk and that Iris took the blame. Was Brandon right to expose the truth in that setting, especially given that Manny collapses and dies after apologizing to Iris?
  4. 4.After Manny dies, Jennifer blames Iris for taking her family and attacks her, while Iris later says she would rather be blamed than have Jennifer know the truth. How does this moment complicate the novel's themes of forgiveness and grief?

Family, Apologies, and Hidden Support

  1. 5.Maverick offers to let Linc feed horses every morning and evening to cover the Harrington Ranch camp fee instead of simply reducing the cost. What does this arrangement reveal about Iris's pride and Maverick's complicated way of helping her?
  2. 6.Maverick secretly helps with Iris's new car, Betty's repairs, and moving Cherry to a nicer room, while Mom secretly visits Iris and pays Linc's hospital bill. How do these hidden forms of support shape your view of the Harrington family, and should Iris have been told sooner?
  3. 7.Jennifer confronts Iris at camp and tells her to stay away, later saying she cannot accept Linc as Lincoln's child. How did you read Jennifer's hostility, and did her eventual apology and request for another chance feel earned?
  4. 8.At breakfast, Maverick refuses to explain why Iris and Linc are at the ranch, saying it is Iris's story to tell, while Mom supports him and Dad warns him to be careful. How did you judge Maverick's handling of his family's questions?
  5. 9.Billie apologizes to Iris through tears and says Iris was her idol growing up, and Dad also apologizes while crying. Did these apologies change how you viewed the Harrington family's earlier treatment of Iris, or did some reactions, like Charlie's, still feel unresolved?

Found Family and Self-Worth

  1. 10.Otis pays for Linc's camp in the past, lends Iris a Buick, pushes Maverick to question his beliefs about the accident, and later considers moving onto the ranch. How does Otis function as found family for Iris and Linc, and what does his skepticism add to Maverick's redemption?
  2. 11.Cherry tells Iris that someone like Maverick would never be with someone like her, yet in other visits she is lucid and affectionate. How does Cherry's behavior shape Iris's fear of being hurt and her sense of self-worth?

Legacy, Belonging, and the Future

  1. 12.Linc is drawn to Copper, Lincoln's horse, and Maverick sees Lincoln in Linc's mouth, squint, and energy, while Jennifer insists Linc is not Lincoln's. What does Linc's resemblance to Lincoln add to the novel's treatment of legacy and grief?
  2. 13.Maverick asks Linc how he would feel about Iris and Linc moving to the ranch, gives Iris a key ring and necklace, suggests Otis move onto the property, and gives Linc the horse Rocket. How well does the novel build this chosen-family ending for Iris and Linc?
  3. 14.Iris tells Maverick it is too fast to marry, then later accepts his proposal at the cove with blankets and twinkle lights and says forever is not long enough. Did the proposal feel earned by the preceding reconciliation, or did it move too quickly?
