Onyx Storm Book Club Questions
by Rebecca Yarros

These questions assume everyone has finished the book and contain spoilers, including the ending.
Onyx Storm gives book clubs plenty to argue about: loyalty, secrecy, power, grief, and the choices people make when love and duty collide. The story keeps shifting what you think you know about its characters, so even quiet readers will have opinions.
Use these questions to spark conversation, not to march through every plot point. Pick a few that fit your group's pace, let everyone answer, and follow the tangents. They work best when you connect the dilemmas to your own ideas about trust, sacrifice, and who gets to decide what is right.
Secrets, Trust, and Hidden Knowledge
- 1.Violet hides Xaden's red-rimmed eyes and channeling from the Senarium and even from some friends, while Ridoc later forces her to tell Rhiannon, Sawyer, and Jesinia. How do you judge Violet's secrecy as protection versus betrayal, especially after Xaden says he would rather be powerless than hurt her?
- 2.Violet discovers she is a dream-walker through Andarna's bond and enters Xaden's and Maren's dreams. How does this second signet change your view of Violet's agency and the danger she poses, especially after Xaden says people would kill her if they knew?
- 3.Aaric sends Violet the marble dagger and tells her to strike in the dark, and Violet realizes he is a precog. How does Aaric's secret knowledge affect the mission and the trust dynamics among the squad?
Bonds, Family, and Identity
- 4.Andarna breaks her bond with Violet and leaves with Leothan. Was that the right choice for Andarna's identity and safety, or did it feel like a betrayal after Violet told her she wanted her happy even if it was not with her?
- 5.Xaden's reunion with Talia on Hedotis and the poisoned dinner reveal his abandonment and the triumvirate's political tests. Did Xaden handle his mother and Faris well, and was Violet's poisoning of the triumvirate justified?
- 6.Cat admits she sees why Xaden chose Violet, but later Trager pursues Cat and Tairn notes she found someone worth lagging behind for. How did Cat's arc from rival to ally and mourner change your opinion of her?
Leadership, Risk, and Duty
- 7.Sawyer relearns to climb Sliseag with his prosthesis, while Violet and the squad wrestle with how much danger he should face. How does his arc challenge the squad's ideas of ability, risk, and belonging?
- 8.Bodhi confronts Xaden about being left behind as first in line, while Xaden prepares him as a successor and orders him deep into the house during the Draithus battle. How do you read Bodhi's anger and Xaden's refusal to let him fight?
- 9.Mira accuses Brennan of using their mother's tactic of sacrificing family for the greater good, while Brennan forces Violet to choose one objective during the Draithus crisis. Whose approach to leadership in crisis did you find more convincing, and why?
Villainy, Grief, and Consequence
- 10.Theophanie kills Maren's parents to lure Violet out, captures Mira, slits Mira's throat, and reveals she is a storm wielder rather than a lightning wielder. How does Theophanie differ from previous antagonists, and what does her manipulation reveal about Violet's vulnerabilities?
- 11.Quinn dies after saving the women and children in the tower, asking Imogen to tell Jax she loves her and to tell her parents it was worth it. Discuss the weight of that death and Imogen's reaction, especially her line about doing what Violet asked.
- 12.Trager is killed by the arrow in Zehyllna and Silaraine dies soon after, forcing the squad to burn them on a minor isle. How does that funeral sequence affect Cat, Maren, and the group's understanding of sacrifice and luck?
Xaden, the Mission, and the Ending
- 13.Xaden asks Violet to promise to sound the alarm if he loses himself, later tells her to kill the other guy he becomes, and yet leaves a note saying not to look for him. Did you agree with his choices in the ending, and what did you think Violet should do next?
- 14.The irids call Andarna a weapon and Xaden an abomination, and they say there is no cure for venin. How does that rejection reshape what Violet believes about the mission and about saving Xaden?
- 15.The book ends with Violet waking with no memory of twelve hours, learning she is legally married to Xaden, and finding his note. What did you think of that ending, and what does the Dunne-sealed marriage blessing suggest about Xaden's plan?
