Never Been Tamed Book Club Questions

These questions assume everyone has finished the book and contain spoilers, including the ending.

Never Been Tamed gives book clubs plenty to untangle: fake dating rules, family loyalty, grief, career pressure, and the messy ways people protect themselves from love. The characters rarely make simple choices, so readers can disagree about motives, apologies, and what counts as growth.

Use these questions however your group likes best. Pick a handful that spark immediate reactions, let everyone answer, and follow tangents. You do not need to go in order, and it is fine if you land on different interpretations. The goal is a lively conversation, not a quiz.

Ares and Harper: Attraction, Rules, and Fear

  1. 1.Harper kisses Ares at the bar and introduces him as her boyfriend to escape Branson and Cynthia, then agrees to fake-date him 'on her terms' with rules like no sex. Did you agree with her decision to keep renegotiating those rules, or did you think she was lying to herself from the start?
  2. 2.Ares tells Harper he killed someone during a pacemaker procedure right after learning his grandfather died, and says that is why he shuts his emotions off. How did that confession shape the way you read his later coldness and his career-versus-home conflict?
  3. 3.When Ares appears at Branson and Cynthia's reception and sings off-key, saying 'nobody puts Harper at the singles table' and 'you're mine,' did that read as romantic, reckless, or both? Would you have wanted a grand gesture like that, or did you side with Harper's earlier anger at him?
  4. 4.Harper tells Daisy she was 'afraid to let myself be hurt again' after being pitied and blamed when Branson cheated, yet at the ridge she says she failed to stop her feelings and would take whatever they can have. Was Harper's arc a believable path from self-protection to choosing Ares, or did she fall too fast?

Family, Advice, and Hidden Agendas

  1. 5.Clyde fakes a heart attack to get Cynthia out of the house and later admits it. Was that moment funny, manipulative, or both — and does it change how you see his line that 'no one plans on it, honey. They go when they finally have a reason to'?
  2. 6.Daddy reveals at Ginny's grave that he knew Harper and Ares were faking their relationship and orchestrated the mountain trip and faked medical episodes to bring them together. Did this reveal make you see Clyde's earlier behavior differently — faking the heart attack, chaperoning the taco dinner, warning Ares 'I'm watching you'?
  3. 7.Nana tells Ares he was wrong to leave Harper, and that women give men permission to choose themselves hoping they'll choose them. How does Nana's own story — walking away from a film career for Joseph after telling Harper women have to stick together — complicate her advice to Ares?
  4. 8.Ares gives Veronica a friends-and-family discount on forty acres and sells her land privately, keeping it from the family until they learn about it. Was it fair for him and Veronica to hide the deal, and how did it affect your view of the Stone family's pattern of keeping secrets?

Forgiveness and the Sisters

  1. 9.Harper tells Lark and her sisters she does not have to be a bridesmaid if it costs her too much, and shows up at Cynthia's door with the dress she will not wear. Did you agree with Harper's choice to step down but still attend the wedding as a guest?
  2. 10.Cynthia says she cannot marry Branson without Harper's forgiveness and hates herself for what she did, then later reveals she helped Ares with his reception gesture. How did you feel about Cynthia by the end of the book, and did she earn any of Harper's forgiveness?
  3. 11.Fallon and Veronica both have deferred lives — Fallon lost Carrick and raises Knox, Veronica buys forty acres to build a cowboy retreat. Do you think the book treats the sisters' choices as resolutions or as setups for the next book, and whose story did you most want to follow?

Career, Competence, and Legacy

  1. 12.Ares comes to Infinity Ridge planning to sell Paw's clinic and return to his Chicago cardiology career, yet he tells Harper at the lookout that he plans to stay only until he can go back — and by the end he buys the old Neiz farm and quits his job. What do you think actually changed him: Harper, saving Mr. Gatlin, finishing his grandfather's model airplane, or something else?
  2. 13.Ares's peer review turns on Miss Hogan's new testimony that he was distant, angry, and made a chilling remark during the procedure, while Dr. Grant points out no one else reported it and it contradicts her first statement. How did this thread affect your view of Ares's competence and his decision to walk out of the hearing?
  3. 14.Rosalee/Ares's guilt over his grandfather runs throughout — his model airplanes, the half-finished plane, wondering what his grandfather and lost patients didn't get to say. Did the book give him a satisfying reconciliation with Paw's legacy, or did the clinic plot feel unfinished to you?

The Final Measure of Change

  1. 15.Clyde says of Ares leaving, 'No one plans on it, honey. They go when they finally have a reason to,' and Ares tells him he'd never ask Harper to choose. By the courthouse wedding, who do you think changed the most — Ares, Harper, or Clyde?
