Grim Tidings Book Club Questions

These questions assume everyone has finished the book and contain spoilers, including the ending.
Grim Tidings gives a book club plenty to argue about: love and death, rules and mercy, bargains that hide other motives, and the cost of saving someone. It is a romance, but the bigger questions about fate, sacrifice, and memory keep the discussion from staying surface level.
Use these questions as a loose map rather than a checklist. Start with whatever topic your group feels strongly about, let people disagree, and do not worry about covering every question in one sitting. The best conversations usually happen when someone sees a moment in a completely different way.
Darcy's Choices and Magic
- 1.Darcy dies at twenty-seven in a hospital and spends roughly ten decades as a Grim Reaper before she meets Gabriel. How does her memory of her mortal illness and her list of things she never did while alive shape her decision to save Nate instead of collecting his soul?
- 2.Darcy hides that Nate is the soul she was sent to collect because she fears Gabriel would shut her out if he knew the truth. Was she justified in lying to him, or should she have told him sooner? How did the reveal affect your view of her?
- 3.Tater Tot is a dead dog Darcy finds injured, heals with her scythe and Reaper magic, and adopts instead of processing through Maverick. What does her refusal to follow the intake rules and her attachment to Tater Tot reveal about her desire to save rather than claim lives?
- 4.Darcy's suppressed magic erupts after she sees Brad outside Frank's flower shop, killing every flower in the shop. How does this loss of control connect to her earlier fear of her magic and Aelia's warning that someone else could follow her magic?
Trust, Bargains, and Duty
- 5.When Gabriel senses death magic in the alley, sees Darcy's eyes turn black with smoke-like tendrils, unfurls his wings, and accuses her of being a Reaper, how does that first reveal set up the mistrust between Reapers and Guardians? Did you think their relationship could recover from that moment?
- 6.Darcy and Gabriel make a bargain: she helps him with her list of mortal experiences in exchange for details about her vision to save a soul. How do each of them secretly plan to manipulate that deal, and what changes by the time they go to the lighthouse?
- 7.Gabriel's scars come from losing two souls to Reapers, and he says losing another soul to a Reaper will cost him his wings. How does his fear of punishment drive his treatment of Darcy, and did his eventual choice to become mortal change how you understood his sacrifice?
- 8.Aelia insists that Reaper work is the most important in the department, yet she covers for Darcy, plants false traces of her magic, and offers Gideon Kit Kats to spare her. Is Aelia's loyalty to Darcy in tension with her belief in the rules, or does it show a different kind of duty?
Mercy, Sacrifice, and the Rules
- 9.Frank recognizes Darcy as the Reaper who took his wife and daughter in a car accident almost forty years ago and orders her out of his flower shop. How does this scene complicate the theme of mercy in a Reaper's work, especially after Darcy later tells Frank about the sea and the rock bridge where his family waits?
- 10.Gideon confronts Darcy, says she owes him a life, and rejects her offers of her soul, afterlife, magic, and memories. Why does Frank's offer to take Nate's place succeed where Darcy's fails, and what does that say about the rules of the afterlife?
- 11.In the graveyard, Gabriel offers his wings and kisses Darcy before she leaves with Frank. Do you agree with Darcy's choice to accept Frank's sacrifice and depart with Gideon rather than let Gabriel interfere further?

Love, Revelation, and Memory
- 13.At the lighthouse, Gabriel shows Darcy the fishing boats and tells her she is not alone, they kiss, and Darcy asks what would happen if they were ordinary. Why is this turning point important for their relationship, and did you believe Gabriel when he said it would not end well?
- 14.Rafe removes Gabriel's wings, reveals that his tattoos are all connected to Darcy, and shows him a soulmate identification form. How did this revelation reframe Gabriel's earlier belief that Darcy was a threat or a distraction from his mission?
- 15.The ending reveals Darcy's final assignment is to be with the man from her vision—Gabriel—for the rest of his life, while Gabriel keeps a Post-it note reading DARCY on his bathroom mirror. Is this a satisfying resolution to their borrowed-time relationship, and what do you make of Gabriel's fear that his mortal mind might forget her?
