Down Bad Book Club Questions

These questions assume everyone has finished the book and contain spoilers, including the ending.

Down Bad gives book clubs plenty to unpack because it pairs romance with messy family loyalty, public pressure, and deeply human fears about belonging. The characters make choices that are easy to judge from the outside but harder to sort through once you consider their histories.

Use these questions as conversation starters rather than a test. Pick a group that interests everyone, give people a minute to jot down thoughts, then let personal reactions and disagreements guide the discussion. You do not need to cover every question in one sitting.

Brayden and Vi: Restraint, Trust, and Intimacy

  1. 1.When Brayden discovers the masked dancer is Vi, he threatens to call her father and insists the night never happened. Did you agree with how he handled that moment, or did his anger and concern for his captaincy overshadow Vi's own reasons for dancing?
  2. 2.Brayden repeatedly tells Vi they cannot be anything because she is his coach's daughter, yet he texts her secretly, comforts her, and eventually declares his love. Did his self-restraint feel genuine, or did his mixed signals make the relationship harder for Vi?
  3. 3.Vi says she wants to feel something other than empty and asks Brayden to stay the night after revealing her feelings about her birth mother and sisters. How did that scene shape your view of her loneliness, and did Brayden make the right choice by staying beside her without sleeping with her?

Secrecy, Pressure, and Public Choices

  1. 4.Vi keeps Trent Matthews's identity as Warren's biological father from Brayden even after Brayden knows about the pregnancy. Was her secrecy understandable given Trent's threat to sue, or did it create a betrayal that could have been avoided?
  2. 5.Josie warns Brayden that Gavin will retaliate and proposes that Brayden date appropriate women through the New Romantics column. Did Josie's interference come across as protective, controlling, or both?
  3. 6.The media exposure of JJ and Addie's secret relationship leads Beckett to hire security, while Savannah reveals the New Romantics column will run and that Brayden has agreed to be the next subject. How did public scrutiny change the stakes for the couples in this book?
  4. 7.Brayden declares that he is the father when Gavin asks who fathered Vi's baby, before Vi has decided how much everyone should know. Did you agree with Brayden's choice to claim Warren so publicly at the Christmas party?

Family, Belonging, and Chosen Fatherhood

  1. 8.After Beckett tells Viviane the nanny job is her last chance, Avery repeats it and Hope quietly welcomes her. How did that pressure affect the way you saw Vi's pregnancy and her fear of disappointing the Langfields?
  2. 9.Gavin's anger ranges from confronting Brayden and Vi in the kitchen to threatening Trent and eventually shaking Brayden's hand on New Year's Eve. Did Gavin's reconciliation with Vi and Brayden feel earned, or did his earlier treatment of Vi leave too much unresolved?
  3. 10.War tells Brayden that blood does not matter and that what is important is showing up, and Warren is named after both War and Gavin. How does that advice compare with Vi's struggle to feel like she belongs in the Langfield family?
  4. 11.Brayden grows up with War and Ava after being a hungry kid, and later says he is choosing Vi and her son. In what ways does Brayden's own found-family history shape how he responds to Vi's pregnancy and to Warren?
  5. 12.Vi tells Winnie that Brayden will be Warren's father in all the ways that count, even though she has not heard from Mr. Matthews since his agent threatened her. How did the story handle the difference between biological paternity and chosen fatherhood?

Everyday Love and Story Endings

  1. 13.Brayden organizes friends and family to assemble the crib, makes pancakes for the twins, and says washing Vi's face is his favorite part of the day. Did those everyday acts of care make his love for Vi convincing, or did the grand gestures matter more?
  2. 14.After the Stanley Cup win, Vi celebrates on the ice with Brayden and Warren, while the ending introduces Foster Wilde watching Freddy and preparing to say hello to his wife. How did that cliffhanger affect your reading of Winnie's story and the book's ending?
